What to know before going to Gomis Mta: everything we learned in 6 trips

Gomis Mta is one of the most beautiful places in Georgia — a spot you want to return to again and again. At about 2,100 meters above sea level, it is roughly a 2.5-hour drive from Batumi.

Of course — to watch the clouds!

It is magical to see them not above your head, but “under your feet.” Soft and white, they gently cover the sea, rivers, villages, and towns like a fluffy blanket. That feeling is hard to put into words — and worth seeing at least once in a lifetime.

Even if the clouds do not show up, the views are still stunning.

Endless open space and the view of the sea make this one of the most beautiful places in Georgia.

We have been here many times — before the road was built and after. The main lesson: the weather at Gomis Mta is very unpredictable.

You can arrive in thick fog or rain, or choose a perfectly clear day and… still see no clouds.

We usually try to go:

• the day after rain;
• or on a clear day with light cloud cover.

So far we have been lucky 🙂

But whether you see clouds under your feet still depends a lot on luck.

We always plan the trip to catch sunset on the summit. Sunsets here are especially beautiful — and evening weather is easier to predict than morning weather.

There is now a live webcam at Gomis Mta. Before you leave, you can check what is happening right now: clouds, visibility, and whether the trip is worth it. An incredibly useful idea — thank you to the people who built it. No more endless guessing about the famous sea of clouds.

Good news: in September 2024 the main access road renovation was finished. A new asphalt road made the trip much more comfortable and about 45 minutes faster.

We drove here before the road was built, and the difference is huge.

A few tips:

• the road climbs the whole way;
• weaker cars can overheat on the long ascent;
• even a low-clearance car can make it;
• it is a mountain switchback road, so if you get carsick, take motion-sickness medicine in advance (for example, Dramamine).

Even after the renovation, remember: the road is seasonal!

In winter and spring it closes because of heavy snow. It usually reopens in late May or June, depending on the weather.

In the shoulder season, check current information — for example in Batumi Telegram chats or with people who were there recently.

For example, on 17 May 2026 we spontaneously decided to go to Gomis Mta. Because it was unplanned, we did not check conditions and did not even bring warm clothes.

Some sections were already clear, but closer to the top the road was still covered in snow. At some point it was clear we could not drive further, so we left the car and continued on foot. We did not reach the summit — we walked a bit, decided not to take risks, and returned to the car.

A week later we learned the road had been fully cleared and opened. So at the start and end of the season, always check the road condition before you go.

Even in summer, the temperature drops quickly in the evening, so bring:

• warm clothes;
• a blanket;
• a thermos with hot tea;
• water and a snack;
• a barbecue grill if you want (you can cook shashlik).

Without warm clothes, evenings get so chilly that you may end up watching the views from inside the car.

This is what we usually do:

1. Check sunset time for the day.
2. Subtract how long you want to spend at Gomis Mta (better to arrive a bit early).
3. Subtract driving time from Batumi.
4. That gives you the best departure time.

This way you can arrive calmly, walk around, take photos, enjoy the views, and catch sunset without rushing.

1. By your own car

The most convenient option is to go to Gomis Mta in your own car.

Pros:

• you can stop at beautiful places along the way;
• you are not tied to other people or schedules;
• you can stay for sunset or linger longer.

2. Rent a car

If you do not have a car, you can rent one in Batumi or Tbilisi and go on your own.

For Gomis Mta, choose a car in good technical condition — the road climbs the whole way.

3. Book a transfer with a driver

If you do not have a license, do not want to drive a mountain road yourself, or simply want to enjoy the ride without worrying about the route, book a transfer with a driver.

A convenient option if you are traveling without a car and want a comfortable ride to Gomis Mta.

4. Join a tour

Another option is to go to Gomis Mta as part of a guided excursion.

A good choice if it is your first time in Georgia, you do not want to plan the route, or you prefer traveling with a guide. Tours usually include transfer from Batumi, guidance, scenic stops, and time to walk on the summit.

Before booking, ask:

• whether transfer from your city and meals are included;
• how much time you will spend at Gomis Mta;
• whether the trip is planned for sunset;
• what happens if weather means no clouds.

Keep in mind that some tours run regardless of weather — you may end up in fog or rain and miss the famous sea of clouds.

If possible, book closer to the departure date, when you can check the current weather and Gomis Mta conditions on the live webcam.

Sometimes the most beautiful places need a little patience and luck. Gomis Mta is one of them: you have to catch the right day. But when everything aligns, the view will amaze you — and the trip will stay with you for a long time.
