Hotel in Khulo with a mountain view: our stay in highland Adjara

We first discovered Khulo in November 2023. For that trip we chose a cozy, affordable hotel with a mountain view and drove there from Batumi.

The drive took about 2–2.5 hours. Roadworks were still underway then, so traffic was occasionally stopped. We were lucky and got through without delays. As of now (July 2026), the road is fully repaired, so such unexpected surprises should not happen — the trip toward Khulo is more comfortable.

After check-in we left our bags in the room and headed straight toward the village of Tago to catch sunset near the famous glamping site.

The road was incredibly scenic: mountain views, golden evening light, cows wandering slowly, and none of the city's rush. Parts of the road were rough, but the views more than made up for it.

At the glamping site we left the car and climbed up for a look around. Stunning panoramas of highland Adjara opened up in front of us — a beautiful sunset, smoke rising from the tents, white laundry fluttering in the wind. That was when we decided we would come back someday to rest, switch off from the city's rush, and enjoy nature and quiet.

We drove back after dark. The lights of the mountain town created a special atmosphere. At one point we missed a turn and got a little lost, but local kids pointed us the right way.

Soon we were back at the hotel, had a snack, and went to rest.

When we travel we almost always try to wake up before sunrise. In the mountains it is especially beautiful: the first rays appear from behind the peaks and paint everything in gold.

We were lucky with a room on the third wooden floor. Wood always feels cozy, and the windows faced the mountains, not the road. Waking up to that view is a real pleasure.

Breakfast was included. We especially remember the hot, freshly made khachapuri. The table also had: cheeses, sausages, cured sausage, honey, baklava and more.

Everything tasted homemade and felt very cozy.

During our stay we felt like guests of good friends.

Whenever we needed something, the owner was happy to help — for example, he brought a corkscrew, glasses, and other dishes without fuss.

You can also order dinner at the hotel.

Guests have access to a shared kitchen to reheat or cook their own food.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Khulo for very little money, with mountain views, quiet, and a homely atmosphere, this option is definitely worth considering.

During our 2023 trip, the famous Khulo–Tago cable car was still running — just a few minutes' drive from our hotel.

So after breakfast at the hotel we decided to try the cable car. The cabin held up to 10 people, and a round-trip ticket cost only 5 GEL.

We waited a bit while locals went first, then took the second ride.

The feeling was incredible — that is when we understood the phrase “beautifully scary.”

Important: as of now (July 2026), the cable car is not operating, so you can only reach Tago by car. The drive takes about 30–40 minutes. The Khulo–Tago stretch requires a car with high ground clearance.

Tago turned out to be a surprisingly cozy village.

Flowers bloomed in the yards, strings of red peppers dried on windows, neat woodpiles sat by the houses, and pumpkins decorated the courtyards.

Cows wandered calmly across the meadows; the only sound was their bells.

We walked back to the glamping site, rested a little, enjoyed the views, and headed back.

On the way back we did hit the roadworks. We waited about 40 minutes, then traffic opened and we returned to Batumi safely.
